Gearbox Software came out with a game in the second quarter of 2009 that could have been the best game ever created. It had everything gamers wanted: 4-man co-op play, a versus mode, a great adventure, tons of loot and the coolest art ever to hit the console. It was almost perfect... almost.
That is, until you got to the end of the primary mission. After spending every night for one full week playing the game with three other friends, I got to the end of the game. Knowing I had what it took, I faced the final boss alone ? hoping to be able to claim all the cool loot in "the vault" for myself, which was the whole purpose of the game and the primary reason most of us bought the game (to find out what was in the vault).
After a 2-hour adventure up a mountain and taking about 20 minutes to kill the final boss, I waited for the vault to open, but it never did. In fact, the game makers made the game so that you couldn't enter vault at all. It was just a gimmick. There was, in fact, no vault to open and no loot to claim. After nearly 72-straight hours of game play, all we were rewarded with was $250,000 and the promise that we could play the game through as many times as we wanted.
Like many gamers out there, I felt sick to my stomach. All I wanted, more than anything, was to get into the vault to claim "fame, fortune, power and women," as the bus driver touted in the game's opening scene. But, it was all one big lie made to make us want to buy and play the game.
It worked. Borderlands originally sold 2 million copies of the game ? grossing about $120 million in sales. But, because of the ending, nearly all those buyers have stopped playing the game and won't buy either of the two DLC's.
Additionally, many critics gave the game higher marks than usual because of the gameplay and the graphic art. Of course, the critics have to say good things if they want their advertising dollars.
But, here at FTG, we don't have to say good things and give top ratings to retain our advertisers. You want the truth, and we give it to you. That's why I'm writing this ? to let all of you know that Gearbox sucks ass and that Borderlands isn't worth the $60 you'll spend on a new copy.
The way Gearbox preyed on gamers and falsely used "the vault" in its advertising for the game should be illegal. If anyone wants to sue Gearbox for fraud and has an attorney for a class action lawsuit, let me know.
